The Shining - Stephen King

Title: The Shining

Author: Stephen King

Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton

Rating: 5/5

Read in French

Summary:
Danny was only five years old but in the words of old Mr Halloran he was a 'shiner', aglow with psychic voltage. When his father became caretaker of the Overlook Hotel his visions grew frighteningly out of control.
As winter closed in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seemed to develop a life of its own. It was meant to be empty, but who was the lady in Room 217, and who were the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why did the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive?
Somewhere, somehow there was an evil force in the hotel - and that too had begun to shine...

 My review:
My very first Stephen King book! Well, we can say I didn't choose the softest one! I hesitated a really long time before deciding to pick up this book since King is such a huge and prolific writer and I was scared to be disappointed. If I had been, I would have been crushed! Thankfully, I'm far from being disappointed!
I loved the characters of the book, their weaknesses and their mental problems. Because, at that point, they are all crazy! But it brings even more to the creepy and suffocating atmosphere of the novel. Moreover, I had heard about the Stanley Hotel that inspired King for that book. It didn't help on the creepy level!
At first, I was a bit thrown aback by the style since I'm not used to it. What I'm used to is direct and twisted and dark thriller novels not subtle horror that's so close to the reality it would not be that hard to believe everything could actually happen. I think that the way Stephen King paints the whole picture makes it so possible that it makes the story even creepier and makes it a success.
The slow side of the book brings more reality but it bothered me a bit. I don't usually like when the story is slow building. But that story is so well crafted, with so well built characters that it didn't bothered me that much and since I loved my read...! To the point I think I'm going to read much more Stephen King from now on!
